The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) is the federal agency with primary responsibility for working with Indian tribal governments and Alaska Native communities. There are about 561 federally recognized tribes in the United States. This includes 197 Alaska Native village groups.

The BIA deals with Indian tribes in a government-to-government relationship. In accordance with the U. S. policy of Indian self-determination, the bureau's foremost responsibility is to promote maximum participation of Indian tribes in the government and education of their people.

Ths notice publishes the current list of 561 tribal entities recognized and eligible for funding and services from the Bureau of Indian Affairs by virtue of their status as Indian tribes. The list is updated from the notice published in December 5, 2003. This notice is a PDF file which requires Adobe Acrobat 6.0 version or better to view and/or print. If you are interested in hearing Erma Lawrence speak Haida, but do not have the opportunity to sit right next to her, click on the link above.

Jordan Lachler, a linguist at Sealaska Heritage Institution, recorded Erma Lawrence speaking Haida at her home in Ketchikan. With this, he created a website where you can go and practice your Haida language lessons. Within the site, just click on the word and then you will hear Erma giving the correct pronunciation.

Thanks, Erma!
